Universal binaries? These apps don't need no stinking universal binaries! That is, the following three apps are not tuned for iPads. A universal binary will switch to the "iPad version" of the app for that device. So you might have MobileStudio on your iPhone, but it also looks great on the iPad because they wrote code and added graphics to accommodate the larger screen size. But the apps I'll list look great with just the 2x upscaling you can do with any iPhone app (like, say, Apple's own Remote app, which is kinda lame on the iPad).

1. Bebot. Now, I've loved Bebot since the day I kissed his cute metal lips. But as a true instrument? The tiny screen on my iPhone did OK, but the iPad allows Bebot to really become a workable synthesizer. Not only that, but those chunky 50's-inspired graphics scale exceptionally well. No need for enhancements, although the tools for customizing Bebot's noises could use an overhaul. How about flip the screen ala iBooks and create a Moog-like patch panel for making new sounds? Analog heaven!

2. Scanner911. OK, so the aliased text on lists and most text IS there. That part doesn't scale. But when the scanner is actually running it looks like a big ol' scanner from something like BJ and the Bear. I want to mount the iPad on some dark wallboard and put an ashtray in front of it for guests. Scanner911 is one of my favorite apps, and I dig that somehow their graphics hold up when doubled.

3. World of Tunes. Most of the tap-based music games on iPhone are too cramped for my arthritic hands. But expanded twice their size they become enjoyable pastimes. World of Tunes is not only more fun on a bigger screen, it allows others to watch (and get those damn songs stuck in their heads). Plus the graphics look kinda cool and retro. The chunky graphics and gradients remind me of hours of playing Sonic. My kids certainly seem to enjoy the game as it is (for now) their favorite on the iPad. It's a really fun, cute game and quite a deal at US$.99.

I have close to 2,000 apps on my machine but have only tested a fraction -- so let me know in the comments what apps you have found that look great when simply doubled. It's also possible that at any time the developers of these apps could push an update that adds scaled-up iPad versions, but for now they rock without update.

How to Make Your iPhone Apps Run in Full Screen Mode On Your iPad

iPhone applications that have not been optimized for iPad yet don’t look so good on the iPad. Sure you have the option to blow up the iPhone apps by hitting the “2x” button, but the pexilization is so bad that it makes this feature almost useless.

For those of you who jailbroke your iPad with the newly released Spirit (see Spirit jailbreak tutorial), there is a solution that will allow you to blow up your apps to fit the full screen, without having the dirty pixelization.

I initially saw this on Remond Pie but the instructions didn’t work at all for me. So I dug a bit more and I found something on ModMyI that perfectly worked for me.

Step 1: Download iPhoneBrowser and launch it. In Cydia, download Afc2Add and reboot your iPhone.

Step 2: Plug your iPad in and navigate to /var/mobile/Applications.

Step 3: Find the application you want to hack and search for the info.plist file in the app’s main folder.

Step 4: Copy the info.plist file to your desktop.

Step 5: With a text editor such as TextWrangular (for Mac) or Plist Editor (for Windows), edit the info.plist file as shown above image:

Step 6: Save the file and drop it back in its location in the app’s main folder.

Step 7: Reboot your iPad.
I tried the following hack on several apps. I didn’t work for many of them but it did work for a few like Tweetie, and I know it works for Facebook as well. I think it completely depends on how the app is designed. Graphic heavy apps don’t seem to do well, whereas text oriented apps such as Tweetie do well.

Abode may file a lawsuit against Apple over new developers’ agreement

With Section 3.3.1 of Apple’s new developers’ agreement clearly prohibiting iPhone apps developers from using cross-platform development tools – evidently blocking Abode Flash in particular -, an ITWorld report says that Abode is likely to file a lawsuit against Apple for denial of Flash on the iPhone platform.

While earlier Apple prohibited developers form using undocumented API calls, the section 3.3.1 of the new iPhone Developer Agreement now bars iPhone apps from being developed in any language except Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript; thereby preventing developers from compiling apps via any “intermediary translation or compatibility layer.”

Apparently, the new clause is targeted directly at Adobe, whose popular ‘Flash’ plug-in has been kept off the Apple mobile platforms. Abode, which has spent the last over one year for Flash R&D, and is coming up with a new Flash CS5 feature capable of packaging Flash projects asiPhone apps, will now find apps created using Flash being rejected at the App Store.

Incidentally, Apple has assured that some of the other cross-platform mobile development suites – including PhoneGap, Ansca’s Corona, and those from MonoTouch, GameSalad, and Unity3D – are not in violation of the new agreement.

Meanwhile, in case Abode does take the legal route against Apple, as reported, not only be the animosity between Apple and Adobe intensify further, but Apple’s power to protect its own platform will also be gauged.

Growing up as a Croatian-American, one of my favorite memories of Easter Sunday has to do with the European tradition of "egg-tapping," or "tucanje."

In many Eastern European countries, people take their colored Easter eggs in hand and square off against each other at the table, tapping the eggs together and seeing which one cracks. Surprisingly, it's very rare to break both eggs. The losing egg
gets eaten, while the winner moves on to the next challenger.

The whole thing introduces a layer of fun and competition to the Easter brunch experience and allows for all kinds of shenanigans and smack-talking. I've always suspected my father used a shellacked egg that one year he ran the table.

Anyhoo, this all leads me to a brand-spanking new app, just approved by the capos di Cupertino. It's called EggsEggsEggs, and it allows you to play simulated egg-tapping on your iPhone. It's quite a physical application, allowing players to swing their phones around and gauge the level of impact.

Turner Sports Launches Branded iPhone App

Turner Sports has created a new app for Apple's iPhone, SportsNOW, which gives fans instant access to live scores and player stats from marquee sports like NCAA Men's Basketball, the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL). It also includes a social media messaging feature that allows fans to interact and engage with friends and other fans.

Turner Sports, which manages Websites for NASCAR, the PGA Tour and the NBA, has already launched over 100 apps on behalf of its clients, the bulk of them being for individual NBA teams. But SportsNOW, which is being sponsored by Dodge's Ram Truck Brand, represents its first branded consumer product.

Turner began developing SportsNOW about eight months ago after performing extensive consumer research, said Turner Sports EVP and COO Lenny Daniels: "We said, let's stop for a minute and think about what's missing in the marketplace and what a consumer really wants."

Turner decided the answer is to create a "virtual sports bar" experience on the iPhone, said Daniels, where a user can customize the interface to follow multiple sports, teams and players at the same time. Fans can also use the app to update their Facebook page and Twitter feed with their thoughts on game action, read other fans' comments and "trash-talk" directly from the app. SportsNOW is now available for download at the App Store at www.itunes.com/appstore/ and includes real-time scoring, in-depth game-by-game statistics and game recaps.

Turner, which is not bringing video or any other rights-based content to SportsNOW, will look to add information from additional sports such as Major League Baseball, professional golf, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the NFL in the future.

Daniels expects that the app will also make its way to the Blackberry and Android smartphone platforms. There are no near-term plans to bring the SportsNOW brand to the Web or other digital platforms, though Daniels says that is possible in the future.

Assassin's Creed II:

Multiplayer Created exclusively for the iPhone and free until March 3, ACII: Multiplayer looks nothing like the third-person action-adventure games that preceded it. Rather, it's a top-down, online-multiplayer game of kill-or-be-killed. It requires Wi-Fi, but Ubisoft's servers automatically link you with up to three other live humans. I found the game a little frustrating at first, but quite a lot of fun once I got the hang of it. Grab it while it's free!

Astro Ranch:

It's Animal Crossing plus FarmVille plus a dash of "Lost in Space." Clear your land, plant your seeds, harvest and sell your crops, and even go fishing and panning for gold. Astro Ranch ($2.99) is a little buggy and crash-prone, but it's also an impressively varied and enjoyable twist on the newly popular farm-game genre.

Rayman 2:

The Great Escape Like Earthworm Jim before him, console favorite Rayman has finally made his iPhone debut. This 3D platformer ($6.99) looks and plays just like its Nintendo and PlayStation predecessors; it's regarded by many as one of the best games ever. Can't say I enjoy fighting onscreen controls in games like this, but for any Rayman fan, this is probably a must-have.

The Price is Right 2010 Admit it:

You've always wanted to "come on down," spin the Big Wheel, and bid in the Showcase Showdown. Well, here's your chance. The iPhone version of The Price is Right ($2.99) features new and classic games from the show, customizable 3D avatars, and single and multiplayer modes.

Apple confirms 3G VoIP apps on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch; Skype is waiting

Apple Inc. confirmed last night that it is now allowing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch developers to build apps that can make Internet calls over a 3G cellular network.

"We revised our Program License Agreement in conjunction with our updated Software Development Kit for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Apps," wrote an Apple spokesperson. "Included in this update is the ability for developers to create VoIP apps that utilize cellular networks."

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol -- essentially, Web-based telephony.

As we reported last night, several VoiP apps have been approved for use on the iPhone, including iCall and Fring.

Skype, one of the most popular VoIP applications, said it had a 3G iPhone app ready to go, but wanted to get a couple of service details squared away.

Skype is waiting for Apple to clarify when the new SDK terms of service for iPhone OS 3.2 SDK beta, which were published yesterday, will go into effect for current iPhone users who are still bound under the terms of iPhone OS 3.12 SDK, according to Skype spokesman Chaim Haas.

"As soon as we have that clarification, Skype will submit its application for approval," Haas wrote.

Apple announced Wednesday that iPad owners will be able to purchase monthly 3G plans for the device, which is quite a bit larger than a normal cellular phone, but could easily be used to make and receive calls.

Now that Apple and AT&T have green-lighted 3G data calls, iPad owners will not necessarily need an additional voice plan (not that the option for one was announced, but plenty of people were wondering).

In fact, the arrival of VoIP to iPhone may well be the beginning of a long decline for the concept of "voice minutes"

AFP launches iPhone app

PARIS - Global news agency AFP has launched a mobile news application for the Apple iPhone.

The application, which also works on the iPod Touch, offers users the agency's global news coverage.

"It gives access to the global news agency?s multimedia content in English, Spanish, Portuguese and German, including breaking world news from wars and conflicts to politics, sport and entertainment, as well as the latest major developments in health, science and technology," AFP said in a statement.

The agency said the application also lets clients integrate and distribute their own content on the iPhone under their own brand.

The application is part of a strategy to cover all mobile news needs and to enable clients to send news across multiple devices and platforms, AFP said.

"We believe that it is our mission to offer our clients mobile-ready content and technological solutions, so they can expand their visibility and reach new audiences," AFP sales and marketing director Erik Monjalous said.

Facebook fixes bug that crashed some iPhone apps

A bug in Facebook's software appeared late Tuesday that caused some iPhone apps using the service to crash instantly, according to developers that spoke with CNET.

The bug was originally thought to be with Facebook's application programming interface, which enabled developers to publish feed stories into their apps. Facebook reminded developers on Monday that the old APIs would be turned off on Tuesday, a plan that had been in the works since last October.

Chris Diskin of Nodconcept, makers of Emoti (iTunes Link), an iPhone app that enables users to post status messages on Facebook with custom emoticons, said his app stopped working on Tuesday afternoon, after the old APIs were supposed to be turned off. However, Facebook representatives later said a bug in the software, not the company's APIs, caused the issue.

The bug didn't affect all apps, and perhaps not even all apps in the same way. For instance, Emoti users that purchased the app and logged into Facebook before Tuesday afternoon were able to use the app just fine. Those that purchased the app after midafternoon on Tuesday found that the app crashed immediately.

Within hours of being alerted to the problem, Facebook engineers tracked down the problem and fixed it.

Diskin confirmed for CNET late Wednesday that Emoti was working again.

You might not get to hear precisely what you want, but chances are you'll discover new music that appeals.

If you can't be bothered splashing out on a DAB radio, plonk your iPhone into a dock, connect its audio output to some speakers, and play one of over 30,000 radio stations through Internet Radio Box.
Shake-to-shuffle is a nice touch, but all the important features are there, too, including favourites management, a configurable sleep timer, and the ability to play in locked mode.

4. Simplify Music 2 (£3.49)
If you're annoyed at your device's meagre capacity and long for a 200GB iPhone, Simplify Music is the next best thing.
In tandem with a Simplify account, an app on your Mac or PC, and a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, you can access your (non-DRM) music from anywhere, along with streamed music from collections of up to 30 friends.

5. Lyrics+ (£1.19)
Coming across like a plug-in for iPod, Lyrics+ enables you to show lyrics while you play your favourite songs. Most of the iPod app's functionality is present and correct, enabling easy access to your music. Although not all lyrics are available, the developer notes that those shown are legal, drawn from LyricFind, and lyrics previously viewed are cached for offline usage.

Stressed out by the holiday season? A few iPhone apps can help you stay jolly.

Although not specifically Christmas-themed, the Flakery, $0.99, brings back childhood memories of paper snowflakes. Users start with a folded piece of "paper" and can use stamps to cut out shapes before they unfold their creation to reveal a snowflake. The flake can then be turned into animated "snow" that can be customized and saved as wallpaper or a photo.

Parents Calling Santa, $1.99, lets parents pretend Santa Claus is calling their children himself, direct from the North Pole. Parents can choose from three call options - good, warning and naughty - with messages that range from "We’ve been working all year long to make your Christmas dreams come true" to "I’m so disappointed, I can’t even muster up a single ‘Ho, ho, ho.’"

Another app that could prove fun for those with young children is the Santa Tracker, $0.99, which tracks Santa on his journey from the North Pole around the world and uses your location to estimate the time left until Santa arrives. The app also includes a blog ostensibly written by characters such as Mrs. Claus and a reindeer trainer (sample post: "Sleigh Is Ready for Lift-Off").

The Christmas Lifecards app, $0.99, lets users upload photos to dozens of Christmas-themed templates to create cards that can be saved, emailed and posted to Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. The app allows for basic photo editing and the addition of text, thought bubbles and the like.

And finally, in the spirit of giving, a free app: the Elf Command game is set in rush hour at Santa’s workshop, where your job is to help cute robot elves sort presents for delivery. The game is simple and intuitive, but the sorting gets more complicated as time goes on.

That's why I never walk into a store without these three iPhone apps at the ready. They're all free, and they make shopping faster, easier, and sometimes even a little less expensive.

CardStar Newly updated with an improved interface and support for 75 additional merchants, CardStar replaces various discount, reward, and membership cards in your wallet. To digitize a card, just enter a merchant name and your barcode number. When you get to the checkout, pull up the onscreen barcode and hand over your phone for scanning. Just don't toss your actual cards until you've done some trial runs, as some scanners have trouble recognizing the iPhone's screen.

pic2shop Suppose you're at Borders, about to plunk down your cash on Brendan Benson's "My Old, Familiar Friend" (good call--best album of 2009, IMHO), but then you wonder: Is this the best price? Find out fast with pic2shop, which scans product barcodes and quickly pulls up prices from thousands of online stores. The latest version offers vastly improved scanning, yet it's still a free app.

Point Inside I've been shopping at the same mall (Twelve Oaks in Novi, MI) since I was a kid, and I still get lost in the place. Where has Point Inside been all my life? This ingenious app provides maps for hundreds of U.S. malls and shopping centers. It can find the malls nearest you, list current mall events and promotions, and even remember where you parked. It's a little buggy, and missing a few major malls in my area, but definitely a great start and a must-have app for mallrats.

Microsoft's Bing app debuts on iPhone

Microsoft's feisty little search service, Bing, has finally made an iPhone app, which is now up on the Apple iTunes app store.

Bing showed off the free app at a party thrown by its mobile team in San Francisco on Tuesday night. Information about the new app is also now on Microsoft's Bing blog here.

Its description on the iTunes store says: "Make decisions and get where you need to go with Bing. See the Bing daily image and related trivia on the home screen. Search maps or the Web with your voice--even say an address. Use Image Search and flick through previews. Download Bing today to find stuff nearby and get there fast."

A Bing PR e-mail noted the key features of the app include: Daily image from Bing.com; easy to access voice search; tips and tricks on the home page; "Locate Me" functionality; ability to add pushpins and save locations; show multiple locations on a single map.

It's a sweet little irony, since Microsoft and Apple have been frenemies over the years.

But bowing to the power of the iPhone as the premiere smartphone out there, Bing has to be on its platform, if it wants to compete with Google and others in the mobile arena.

Microsoft already has some apps for the iPhone, such as for its Seadragon photo app, a Tag Reader app and various manual apps.

And, while others have made apps that allow its popular software to work on the Apple device, Microsoft has yet to release one, although sources said the company is working on them.

Microsoft has already made Bing apps for Windows phones, the BlackBerry from Research in Motion, the Sidekick and select BREW-based devices on Verizon, as well as Bing mobile from a browser.

Company execs recently showed off a spate of innovations for Bing, including new mobile features, but not in an iPhone app.

But, no matter how you look at it, the iPhone app is the big time.

Study: iPhone beats Windows Mobile in market share

Apple's iPhone has topped Microsoft's Windows Mobile in U.S. market share of smartphone operating systems for the first time, putting it in the No. 2 spot, according to a report from ComScore released Thursday.

In February, 5.2 million respondents to ComScore's survey reported using Apple's iPhone, while 6.8 million reported using phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile, according to a report on FierceDeveloper. ComScore, a market research firm, averages results in a three-month period.

In May, Apple's number rose to 5.7 million, then 6.6 million in July, and finally to a high of 8.9 million for October, the most recent period for which results are available. In comparison, Microsoft rose in May to 7 million, dropped in July to 6.6 million, and went back up in October to 7.1 million.

The highest market share numbers in the survey go to Research In Motion's BlackBerry. It registered 9.6 million in February, 12.2 million in May, 13 million in July, and 14.9 million in October.

It's interesting to note that Palm's number rose from 2.3 million to 2.8 million in 2009, and Google's Android operating system rose to a high of 1 million by October.

The survey asked U.S. mobile subscribers, who had to be over the age of 13, what type of phone they use. ComScore then figured out what operating system they were using and calculated the data for the report.

Toshiba Announces 64GB Flash Memory; Perfect For Next iPhone

On Monday Toshiba announced a new 64GB flash memory module, which the company claims is the highest-capacity flash module in the industry. The new 64GB NAND flash module is just 30 micrometers thin, packs a dedicated controller, and contains sixteen 32Gbit chips. It was manufactured using Toshiba's 32-nanometer process.

These memory modules are geared toward use in various portable devices, and once the new modules arrive in early 2010, it likely won't be long before we see a range of new pocket-sized gadgets using the higher 64GB capacity, including future iterations of Apple's iPhone.

Toshiba is currently Apple's flash supplier for the iPhone 3GS, according to iSuppli. Recent rumours have hinted that the fourth-generation iPhone will arrive next summer, and although neither Apple or Toshiba has commented, it seems only logical that the next iPhone will be packing 64GB of flash memory.

64 GB is enough storage for 1,000 hours of music, 8 hours of HD video and 19 hours of SD video--a nice upgrade from the current 16GB and 32GB iPhone capacities.

Toshiba's 64GB memory module will have a sample shipment later this month, with it entering mass production in the first quarter of 2010.

Google Revs Up iPhone Search App

Google has taken the opportunity to offer a new version of its mobile search application for the iPhone. The new software makes several improvements to the usability of the application, including the ability to recognize Australian accents.

I use the Google iPhone App to perform searches daily. It has become a vital tool in my life. The changes Google has made to the application make it that much more vital (well, OK, maybe not the Australian accent thing, I rarely pretend to be Crocodile Dundee).

First up, Google has redesigned how search results are displayed. It now shows more results at once and opens web pages from the results within the app. This adds up to faster access to the content you want. And, well, we all know about Google's insane need to make everything faster.

Next, Google has made it easier to customize the look, feel and performance of the application. Its Bells and Whistles feature is more easily accessible. Alastair Tse, Software Engineer, explains, "You can style your Google Mobile App in any shade: red, taupe, or even heliotrope. If you're on a faster iPhone, like the iPhone 3GS, you may want to try the live waveform setting which turns on, as the name suggests, a moving waveform when you search by voice."

Google has also made changes to Google Voice Search. As I mentioned, it now supports English spoken with an Australian accent. (When Voice Search first launched, it didn't support British accents, and didn't let British users search effectively). Voice Search now supports both Mandarin and Japanese are supported languages as well.

NASA launches app for iPhone and iPod Touch

Can't get enough of your favorite iPhone apps, like Flight Tracker, Photogene and TweetDeck? Well, NASA is hoping to add one more to your list of favorite iPhone applications.

The space agency today released NASA App 1.1 for the Apple Inc. iPhone and iPod Touch products.

NASA App 1.1 adds several new features, like new content about space missions, and visible sighting opportunities for orbiters from the user's home location or through searched locations.

NASA said there are no plans at this point to extend the offering to other mobile platforms like Google Android, BlackBerry from Research in Motion Ltd. or Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

The Telegraph has launched a new and improved version of its news application to help Apple iPhone users keep up with the latest headlines on the go.

The Telegraph app is available free of charge, unlike some other news applications.

The application - a small piece of software installed on a mobile device - automatically pulls in the latest news headlines and weather forecasts from the Telegraph website, making it quicker and easier to see top stories and sports results.

The Telegraph app works with Apple's iPhone, and can either be downloaded directly on to the device through the iTunes App Store, or copied across to the phone using a computer.

New features include the ability to instantly share interesting stories or pictures via email, Twitter or Facebook at the touch of a button, and access to video reports and picture galleries.

Users can also use the application to alert the Telegraph to a breaking news story. By clicking on the "Report" button, users can upload a photo and give a brief eyewitness account of breaking news.

"This new, improved app provides a really rich, multimedia news experience," said Maani Safa, head of mobile at Telegraph Media Group. "We've made the software as easy to use as possible, and there are lots of features that readers will love.

"We can provide you with up-to-the-minute weather forecasts based on your current location, or show you a list of the day's hottest news stories. And if you're catching a flight or taking the Tube, all of the stories and photos are still available, even if you don't have a mobile phone signal."

The Telegraph launched its first iPhone application earlier this year, and also makes a variety of apps for the BlackBerry and handsets running Google's Android operating system.

Tips to keep your iPhone battery going strong

Users of Apple's iPhone have their own ways of squeezing the most life from the cell phone's "nonreplaceable" battery.

Here's a few suggestions from Apple's own iPhone support Web site. Some of these seem elementary, but others I never would have guessed would save power.

If you're not using it, turn off Location Services.

Turn off or minimize push notifications and push e-mail.

Minimize third-party apps that don't dim the screen.

Turn off Wi-Fi if you're not using it. But if you are, you'll save power by surfing the Web via Wi-Fi rather than over the cell network.

If you're not using a headset or other Bluetooth accessory, keep Bluetooth turned off.

If you're out of cell coverage (no service), use Airplane Mode.

Adjust your screen brightness by half or more.

Turn off EQ settings on your music.

Turn off 3G. If you're really only using the iPhone for phone calls and e-mail, you'll realize a huge energy gain by turning off 3G and using the slower Edge network.

Turn your auto-lock setting down to one minute.

By the way, Apple says you should completely discharge and recharge your iPhone's battery at least once per month and the battery should still retain 80 percent of its capacity after 400 charge cycles.

When the time comes, Apple will replace your iPhone's battery for $85.95 at any Apple retail store in three business days.

Gone Legit: First iPhone Hacker Hired to Create iPhone Apps

Look, it’s a recession, and you gotta do whatever you can to get your name out there. Ashley Towns, the 21-year-old Australian student who crafted the first iPhone worm, used the notoriety to land a job building iPhone apps with the Australian developer Mogeneration.

Though this might seem an odd way to land a new gig, Towns is just the latest in a long line of hackers turned legit. And his worm was tame by comparison to its followers: Towns’ code simply rickrolled "jailbroken" iPhones-those hacked by their owners-by changing the phone’s wallpaper to a glamor shot of singer Rick Astley. Some subsequent iPhone worms are far from harmless pranks; one steals banking information.

Despite the relative harmlessness of Towns’ rickroll, the idea of rewarding bad behavior doesn’t sit well with some developers. Wired.com reports:

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said the move sends the wrong message to hackers.

"What disheartens me is that Towns has shown no regret for what he did," Cluley told TechWorld. "Now his utterly irresponsible behavior appears to have been rewarded. There are plenty of young coders out there who would not have acted so stupidly, and are just as worthy of an opportunity inside a software development company, and are actually quite likely to be better coders than Towns who made a series of blunders with his code."

Apple field testing newest iPhone 3,1

With 2010 right around the corner, Apple is already field testing the newest version of the iPhone. The newest model, deemed iPhone 3,1 is supposed to be a large upgrade over the previous 3GS version. If all goes to plan this new iPhone can really help Apple’s fight in the smart phone wars against the Droid.

The reports of the new iPhone 3,1 being tested near Apple headquarters in San Francisco is creating a buzz in the smart phone industry. Speculations over what Apple is doing with the iPhone to counter the droid is abundant. There are rumors that a new processor for the iPhone have surfaced which is supposed to make the iPhone 3,1 exponentially faster than the 3G or even the 3GS.

If all goes to plan, the iPhone 3,1 could be ready for deployment in the smart phone wars sometime in the middle months of 2010. This estimation would ironically coincide with the time Apple’s exclusive iPhone contract ends with AT&T. This would free up Apple to release the iPhone on the Verizon and other wireless carriers. Releasing the iPhone on the Verizon network could be a crushing blow to the Droid if it does not gain momentum by then.

New Xbox Live iPhone App Now Available

A new Xbox Live iPhone app is now available on the Apple Store that allows you to manage your Live account in just about every way you would possibly want to on the go -- from accepting friend requests to seeing which friends are online and sending them messages.

Called 360 Live, the app currently costs $1.99, but as Joystiq noted, that price may soon be reduced to free. Microsoft decreed back in August of 2008 that any Xbox Live-related app must be released free of charge, so it's likely the price for this app will be dropped once Microsoft has its say.

iPhone owners download more than ‘ordinary’ people

iPhone owners spend more than online than people who haven’t nabbed Apple’s super-phone, according to research by technology law firm Olswang. So why are iPhone owners more likely to splash their cash?

Olswang’s Convergence Survey reveals that in the wider population, 58% of people would download new films and 40% would grab a digital copy of a film that’s out on DVD too. iPhone owners stats are significantly higher – 73% would download a new film while 54% would nab a download of an older film.

iPhone users are also far more excited by ebooks and digital magazines. While only 30% of the entire population would download an ebook and 29% would buy a digital magazine, 42% of iPhone users will buy ebooks and 38% are up for reading digital magazines.

With the vast iTunes App Store catalogue at their finger tips, it makes sense that iPhone users are up for buying more digital content – they’re doing it all the time anyway.

The stats will make pleasant reading for Apple if it is working on bringing ebooks and digital magazines to the much-rumoured Apple Tablet.

Tesco to sell iPhone in UK in possible price war

Tesco has confirmed that it will be selling the iPhone in the near future, as part of Apple's moves to open up its UK distribution channel.

The UK's largest retailer will start stocking the phones "shortly" and will be selling the phones via the Tesco Mobile shops that it has set up with O2. Reports suggest that Tesco will be selling the handsets before the all-important Christmas retail rush.

"It is a bit of a coup to get this before the other operators," Tesco Mobile said.

The move will be a blow to Vodafone, who won't be able to sell the iPhone until after Christmas and raises the possibility of a price war with Orange which has also secured a handset deal with Apple, but at similar prices to O2.

Tesco is getting heavily into the UK mobile phone market, with a plan to double the number of Tesco Mobile outlets to 200 by the end of 2010. if it decides to compete on price, as it has in other markets, then mobile operators could face a price war over mobile tariffs.

Schiller: No apologies for App Store approval process

Apple's App Store has been a runaway success, but it's also been mired in controversy due to the application approval process. The company, however, isn't making apologies for its stringent gatekeeping and insists it's acting in the best interest of its customers.

"We've built a store for the most part that people can trust," Phil Schiller, Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, told BusinessWeek in an interview posted Monday. "You and your family and friends can download applications from the store, and for the most part they do what you'd expect, and they get onto your phone, and you get billed appropriately, and it all just works."

Schiller offered BusinessWeek a breakdown of app rejections. Of the applications sent back to developers, about 90 percent are due to technical issues and simply need code tweaks to make the apps work properly.

About 10 percent are rejected because they try to steal personal data or try to help someone break the law or because they contain content that Apple considers inappropriate, BusinessWeek reported.

About 1 percent are turned away for reasons that fall into gray areas, Schiller told BusinessWeek.

One of Apple's latest run-ins with a developer was over the use of Apple product images in Rogue Amoeba's audio-streaming app called Airfoil Speakers Touch. After three-and-a-half months of back and forth over an update for the already-live app, Apple is apparently going to let the company resubmit the app update with the product images intact as originally submitted. However, the ordeal has apparently soured Rogue Amoeba on future development for the App Store.

"At this time, we have no plans to return to the platform," Rogue Amoeba CEO Paul Kafasis told CNET on Monday. "Apple has corrected one small problem with their review process. But the platform as a whole still has many issues that need to be addressed before we consider it a viable place for our business to commit resources."

The App Store currently has more than 100,000 third-party applications available for download. Apple has reported more than 2 billion downloads since the online store opened in July 2008.

iPhone market is ripe for Flash invasion

Speaking at the Unite 2009 conference in San Francisco, Infrared5's John Grden discussed the growing market for Flash game makers to port their games to iPhone.

Grden, who has a long history in Flash and 3D and who most recently worked on the upcoming iPhone title Star Wars: Trench Run, used the game Falling Balls as an example of the success possible.

A two-colour, stick-figure game created in its original Flash as an experiment on Flash physics, Falling Balls was released by Keith Peters as a free app with in-game ads. After reaching number one on the App Store, Peters has earnt almost $30,000 - with revenues in the first month exceeding $900 per day.

"As Flash developers, we're used to making games for free," said Grden. "Doing it for money feels dirty at first, but in this economy budgets are being cut across the board and you need to get income whenever you can."

The movement from the Flash Player to iPhone isn't a massive step performance-wise, said Grden. "Performance-wise, games running in the Flash Player on, say, a modern dual-core system and native apps running on the iPhone are actually quite comparable," he continued.

"In fact, sometimes the performance on iPhone is better. If you've been using Flash 3D or Papervision3D or similar, you won't have to do a huge amount of work to the assets."

He did, however, seem unenthused by Adobe's recently announced Flash export path to iPhone.

"From what I understand, Adobe's export path skips Xcode project generation and just spits out a file. While that means that development can probably be done on Windows machines too, it also means that you can't interface between Cocoa and the Flash Player, which is a lot more limited than what Unity does."

Apple Begins Fixing the iPhone App Store Approval Process

Just over a year ago, Apple launched the iPhone App Store, giving countless developers the ability to create dynamic apps on the iPhone mobile platform. And while over 100,000 apps have been created already, it hasn’t been all sunshine and roses between Apple and 3rd party developers. Multiple iPhone app bannings, inconsistent app rules, and the Google Voice controversy have all left a bad taste.

It took long enough, but finally Apple’s taking steps to rectify the situation. A few days ago, Apple began to give developers a long overdue feature within its Dev Center website: the ability to track the status of apps submitted to Apple’s store.

The new system is straightforward: when a developer logs into the Dev Center, he or she can see bulletins and status updates that discuss the app’s progress through the app store approval process, including “In Review,” “Waiting for Review,” and “Ready for Sale” updates. It also timestamps each note.

While it’s a small step towards transparency, it shows that Apple has a willingness to work with developers to fix the app store’s problems, something we’ve doubted in the past. More changes, like a consistent and open policy on approvals and rejections, are still needed, but this is the direction Apple needs to go in order to improve the iPhone platform.

I'm sure most of you have heard about Apple's new iPhone and all the different functionality it has to offer, so I'll spare you the details. What I will share with you are the top ten applications that I enjoy and use on a daily basis.

1. ZenBe Lists - This is a to-do-list application that lets you itemize your daily tasks. The app features a minimalist green user interface, extremely functional features, and a free price tag. I find ZenBe Lists to be above and beyond other to-do-list applications, which is why I chose it as part of my everyday apps.

2. NetNewsWire - Sorting through my feed list is much more efficient on the iPhone as opposed to on the web. That's where NetNewsWire is so helpful; this application is an RSS reader just like its parent Newsgator only for the iPhone. So if you're one to enjoy news feeds then make sure you review NetNewsWire.

3. Twinkle - This is a great Twitter application. If you're asking yourself what a twitter is, don't feel too bad. Twitter is a website that allows you to blast out short updates about your daily life ("I'm at home on Appcraver looking at this new game, and then I'm going to the market") to your friends and people that want to track you. So what's so special about Twinkle? Well the main differentiator is that it knows your location. It taps into the iPhone GPS and adds your current location to all of your tweets! You can also keep track of nearby twinkles.

4. Facebook - It seems nowadays everyone is obsessed with checking their Facebook; well at least I am. This application makes it easier; it gives you one touch access to all of your friends, your profile and inbox. You can even ping anybody who is online and start chatting instantly. The best part is you have immediate access to your Facebook inbox and you don't have to login every time. Oh and did I mention it's free.

5. Shazam - This totally free application is a life saver! Have you ever heard a song that you loved so much, but didn't know the name of it or who the artist was? Well with this application you can solve that problem once and forever. All you do is hold the iPhone up to the music that's playing and hit the "Tag Now" button. Shazam does the rest! A couple seconds later it will return the name of the artist, record cover and name of the song right to your iPhone.

6. Pandora - This next application is great for parties or whenever you want music playing but don't want to assume control of the songs. All you have to do is type the name of a band, and Pandora will create a custom "radio station" around that band, which includes songs from the band itself, as well as songs that "sound like" that artist. You had to be living in a cave over the past ten days to miss the iPhone hype, and while it’s now replaced by the Batman hype, I thought I’d share with my experience a week or so in.

There have been plenty of articles written about the new iPhone 3G: Walt Mossberg, gizmodo, Engadget and cnet, so I’m not going to give a review, but I am going to tell you why it’s a game changer and why it’s more computer than phone. Building on what David Pogue wrote about last week regarding applications, let’s go a little deeper and talk about usage.

First, if you take a look at any of the reviews listed above, you’ll notice that the phone usage comes last. Why? Well, like I said, this is more computer than phone. It’s about what you can do with it, and oh, by the way, you can make calls as well. As I look at my usage over the past week, it’s weighted about 80% data/computer and 20% phone; if anything, I think I’ll probably up the data/computer percentage a bit over time. We’ll see.

I’ll get the negative out of the way first. Sure, I’ve had some BlackBerry restarts and crashes, but I’ve had more in the last week on the iPhone than I’ve had in the last few months on my BlackBerry Curve. So iPhone -1

Taking full advantage of the accelerometer games like Crash Bandicoot and iPint (which by the way is a GREAT example of advergaming gone right!) allows the user to control the games by simply tilting and rolling the phone. Playing feels definitely un-phone-like, more like a PSP like experience, a great way to kill time when you’re not making a call. Game play +2

6 Social Networking
What computer phone would be complete without social networking tools? And with the new iPhone came AIM Chat; as expected, it’s connected to your iChat / AIM account so it uses the same log-in to give you access to your buddy lists.

Recently updated (thankfully, as the initial release version was light on features) is the Facebook app. So chat and the majority of my main Facebook features, all on the go, a winner. Staying Connected +3

7 Email and calendar
Building on the Mac’s already well-integrated email and calendar in Leopard, Apple’s new MobileMe gives you Over the Air (OTA) syncing, just like those corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. Now admittedly, MobileMe had some issues in the maelstrom of switch from .mac and new iPhone release and some users have had problems with the OTA syncing, but my usage has been great. And I love that my calendar, email and contacts stay up to date across my computer, web and iPhone. OTA syncing +1

I’ll stop with seven reasons, but the list could go on, mainly due to the great applications, leveraging the hardware and software that Apple built. It’s a game changer in my opinion. Why? Ever wanted to know how to make an iPhone ringtone?

Well, there is a neat way and the method described below is primarily for Windows, as if you have a Mac, you can use Garage Band to create a custom ringtone.

So, this is how you do it. Open up your iTunes software and search for the track you have decided will do nicely as your new ringtone. Remember it has to be a DRM-free track; one without digital locks (known as Digital Rights Management technology). Okay, so you’ve selected the appropriate track, the right-click on it and further click on the option which says Get Info tab.

Next you get the chance to select the part of the song you want as a ringtone by pressing the Options tab and finding the Start Time and End time choices. Ensure your portion is less than 30-seconds in length, then tick both of the boxes and click Okay when finished.

Don’t Be Too Original
iPhone users already know how to do certain tasks on their phones by convention. If your application needs similar functionality, don’t be creative and come up with a new way to solve the same problem. Use the conventions already established by Apple.

New conventions are difficult to establish especially with the touch interface because there is no way to discover how your application works on the iPhone. Unlike a website where you can hover with the mouse pointer over areas that look like you can interact with them and a tool tip or the status bar will reveal some clues to you.

Know Your Limitations
The current version of the iPhone SDK, which is used to write applications for the iPhone, has many restrictions and limitations. Some of them are common sense, e.g. you can’t send text messages from an application. Imagine an application that sends out thousands of text messages without your knowledge, who is going to pay the phone bill for that?

Other restrictions are maddening: applications cannot access the log of phone calls, or interact in any way with the calendar or the music stored on the iPhone.

To Apple’s credit, the iPhone SDK is an amazing piece of software especially given that it was publicly released as a Beta just three months ago. Some of the shortcomings listed above will likely be addressed in future releases of the SDK.

As a buyer with an idea for an iPhone application, you should educate yourself about these limitations before you spend too much time designing an application that is impossible to implement. A 2005 New Scientist article rightly described the mobile phone as the new Swiss Army Knife.

But as is always the case with information technologies, the "how much is too much" question gradually arose. And it was not probably feasible to pack all the features in a single reasonably priced gadget. With a fierce competition and little time to ponder this long-standing question, most manufacturers seem to have opted for an easier solution: to segment the market. The ultimate exemplary of this thinking is Nokia, so far the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, with its tens of models geared toward different audiences. For instance, there is the "business" line, which is heavier on business applications, and the "media" line, with better support for music and video.

With a few exceptions (such as the unexpected success of Motorola's extra-slim Razr, whose external design was its biggest selling feature), the segmentation paradigm seemed to hold. And other smart phones manufacturers, like Palm and Black Berry, in fact toed the line, offering different models aimed explicitly at different purposes.

Interface Supremacy :

Until the iPhone emerged. That was in December 2006, when Steve Jobs gave the first glimpses of the new keypad-less, multi-touch gadget, with a user interface carrying visual resemblances to the Mac operating system, which runs Apple's computers. On the new gadget, icons glowed, menus flowed, and the wide (3.5 inch) display seemed the first realistic option to browse the Internet and actually read stuff online.

If the ensuing media fixation on the iPhone, particularly after it was released about seven months later, was any indicator, that was Apple's finest hour. A Harvard business professor estimated that the free media publicity Apple received in coverage for the iPhone was in the vicinity of USD400 millions, Wired magazine reported last March.

Most of what the iPhone offers, strictly speaking, has been offered by others for years. But Apple's focus on striking the right bundle (instead of multiple lines and consumer segments) and superior user interface puts its iPhone far ahead of the competition. At least for now.

A bit of History
